Winter Wisconsin

No, this isn't about things to do in the snow.

Up in Sawyer County you will find the Village of Winter!  It wasn't named for the season, but for John Winter, a railroad man who help develop logging in the area.

Any time of year is a great time to visit Winter, which sits near the center of the Tuscobia State Trail, and near the Chequamagon National Forest and Flambeau State Forest. Many sites for camping, fishing, hiking, ATVing, hunting and more are all around the area.

Discounts to First Time Hunters, Fishermen

Wisconsin is hoping to make fishing and hunting more attractive to young people - article from the Chicago Tribune
Wisconsin Republicans have introduced a sweeping bill to boost hunting and fishing in the state by offering steep discounts to first-time license applicants and making it more difficult to close off land.

States and outdoor groups have been stepping up efforts to retain and recruit hunters as suburbs gobble up land, the population ages and video games, social media and sports consume children's time.

Outdoor advocates fear the country's outdoor traditions — and the billions of dollars they pump into the economy through equipment and license sales, gas purchases, restaurant visits and hotel stays — are fading away.

Lake Tomah Project Aims at Improved Fishery, Lake Habitat

Weekly News Article by the Central Office Wisconsin DNR

TOMAH - In the past week and a half, thousands of dead carp have floated to the surface of Lake Tomah, the result of a chemical treatment by the state Department of Natural Resources.

From a biologist’s perspective, it is a gratifying sight and for local residents it is cause for celebration. It means this reservoir has been released from the death grip of the invasive carp. Lake Tomah has been given that rarest of gifts – a fresh start.

In two to three years this weedless mud hole will once again be a clear-water lake with rich green plants waving in soft, near-shore currents. Within five years, healthy populations of northern pike, largemouth bass, black crappies and bluegills will thrill a new generation of fishermen.

“It’s wonderful and it’s exciting,” said Ruth Nystrom, an enthusiastic lakeshore resident who helped cook lunch for work crews on treatment day. “It’s going to be clear and the fishing is going to be good. It’s going to be a real asset for Tomah.”
