Great Wisconsin Birdathon

May 12th is International Migratory Bird Day, and here in Wisconsin many will be heading outdoors to see up to 350 different species of birds that spend time in our state.

This year the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative is promoting the first ever Great Wisconsin Birdathon, a fund raiser to support state and local bird conservation programs.  During the month of May teams of 2 or more gather pledges then spend a day bird-watching and identifying bird species. This is the first year for this event, but the WBCI hopes to make it an annual fund raiser.

Get all the details for participating in or donating to the Great Wisconsin Birdathon here first-ever Great Wisconsin Birdathon

If you're new to birding, several Wisconsin State Parks are hosting events on May 12th - see the event list here "Opening Day" for birdwatchers is May 12

Forest Appreciation Week

April 22nd to April 28th has been proclaimed Forest Appreciation Week and Friday April 27th has been proclaimed the 129th Celebration of Arbor Day in Wisconsin (see the Governor's Proclaimation here)

Trees are a valuable resource in Wisconsin, and around the world. Arbor Day gives us a chance to remember this, and give back by planting a tree of our own.  Many Arbor Day celebrations will be taking place at schools this week, so don't be surprised if your little one brings home a seedling this Friday!  Get tree planting tips and more Arbor Day fun information on the Wisconsin DNR website Celebrate Arbor Day

Is your community a "Tree City"? The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, gives recognition to communities who work to maintain and promote their green areas.  Check out all of Wisconsin's and the US's Tree Cities here Tree City USA Communities

Houlton - Wisconsin's next boom town?

Will the new Stillwater Bridge be good or bad for Houlton, Wisconsin.  Article by twincities.com
Houlton? Really?

Most people would laugh at the idea of Houlton, Wis., being a boom town, if they have even heard of it.

But if a new four-lane, freeway-style bridge is built across the St. Croix River, a surge of growth is bound to follow. Perhaps the biggest change would come to Houlton, a community of 386 not even big enough for a stop sign on its main street.

Full story Never heard of Houlton, Wis.? Wait for the new Stillwater bridge

Who's the Mitten State?

If you are on Twitter or Facebook you already know that Travel Wisconsin, the State Tourism Bureau, has changed it's logo to a mitten that has the shape of Wisconsin.  In fact, they recently changed the original brown mitten to a green and gold one, in light of the Packers success.

What you may not know is that many people in Michigan are quite upset about this.  They believe that their state, not ours, looks like a mitten and that Wisconsin has taken their identity.  Many news stories and blogs have been showing up about this issue.  Here's a selection of them, from both sides, so you can decide where you fall on this mitten state debate.

Fun in Wisconsin

One of the great things about Wisconsin is every community has it's own activities and festivals. Each town, large or small, has at least one (most have more) event that draws folks from all over to come and enjoy the day.

When planning your purchase of a dream property you should take the time to get to know the area you are looking in, know what the local community is about and times they celebrate - so you can join in the fun!

On our BuyWisconsinLand.com site we have a page with links to many Wisconsin's County tourism pages. Government and Tourism page Feel free to visit and check out what each area has to offer.
